Flights of Marigold

Laksa Media. (Addicted to Heaven, Bk. 2). Aug. 2020. 394p. ISBN 9781988140216. $28. FANTASY
In this follow-up to Bursts of Fire, sister magiels Meg, Rennika, and Janat are in a remote area of the kingdom where Rennika is living as a journeyman dyer. While Janat spirals into addiction, Meg seeks the Amber Prayer Stone, rumored to have survived its attempted destruction and to have healing powers. At the same time, the three sisters get caught in the middle of a dynastic takeover that will shift power balances and break alliances including, possibly, their own. This solid continuance of the series features well-fleshed-out characters and builds upon an intriguing plotline that the title advances well. Since it is a series, it’s recommended to read the books in order, to obtain a full understanding of what happened and is happening within the overall story.
VERDICT A definite twist to the fantasy genre is that while the logical consistency of the magic is there, the book (and series) is meant to focus on addiction and its many incarnations. It is an unusual subject choice for fantasy but one that is interesting, enjoyable, and relatable.
