After failing to stop an exorcism himself, Father Philip Lamont (Richard Burton) is tasked by a high-ranking cardinal to investigate the events surrounding the death of Father Merrin (Max von Sydow), whose legacy is threatened by accusations of heresy. Formerly possessed by the demon Pazuzu, Regan (Linda Blair) is now happy and studying the art of tap dance, no longer recalling any of the events of her previous terrors. Regan's psychiatrist Dr. Gene Tuskin (Louise Fletcher) believes that her experimental psychic device will allow her to hypnotize Regan and link Father Lamont into her repressed memories. The coupling does indeed work, but this action draws the attention of the still-potent Pazuzu, who will stop at nothing to prevent any exploration into its shadowy past.
VERDICT This unusual sequel by visionary director Boorman delivers a powerful view of a world in which science, magic, and religion combine as an antidote to demonic horrors. Imperfections exist in editing and script, but the results remain boldly evocative.
