As the 2018 season of this popular American police procedural series opens, an eccentric Sherlock Holmes and his housemate Dr. Joan Watson continue their partnership as consultants to the New York City Police Department. In addition to solving crimes ranging from arson to theft to murder, several additional story lines are introduced in this modern-day Arthur Conan Doyle adaptation. Holmes (Jonny Lee Miller), a recovering drug addict, suffers from post-concussion syndrome; Watson (Lucy Liu) considers adoption; a serial killer is on the loose; and life at the 11th Precinct is changing. Originally scheduled for 13 episodes, an additional nine scripts were ordered in midseason, affording a noticeable break in continuity. The strengths of the series, which follows a fairly standard format, are the relationship between Holmes and Watson and the performances of the two stars. A seventh and final season is scheduled for 2019 broadcast.
VERDICT Recommended for viewers who are fans of the series as well as those who enjoy police dramedies. [See Trailers, LJ 10/1/18.]
