Distant Voices, Still Lives

b/w. 85+ min. Arrow Academy, dist. by MVDvisual. 1988. Blu-ray UPC 760137176787. $39.95.
Written and directed by Terence Davies (The Deep Blue Sea; Sunset Song; A Quiet Passion), this demanding autobiographical drama portrays a working-class family in postwar Liverpool terrorized by an abusive dad (Pete Postlethwaite) sometimes given to moments of tenderness. Punctuated by popular songs counterpointing the dreariness of its subjects' lives (à la Pennies from Heaven), the at-times tough yet wistful film is an emotional roller coaster. Nicely restored for its 30th anniversary, this extras-laden edition benefits from optional subtitles for catching heavy dialect.
