Crying Wolf

Riptide. May 2021. 410p. ebk. ISBN 9781626499416. $4.99. PARANORMAL ROMANCE
Amir and Ali Bashir, identical twins and werewolf brothers, both await trial for an attack on an innocent human, but only one of them committed the crime. Forced into the dark, violent werewolf prison, the brothers are separated and must forge relationships on their own for the first time in their lives. Amir finds comfort in his cellmate Ben, who brings a smile and some solace to his new life, which is full of worries about his twin and their younger sister, whose life continues outside the prison. On the other side of the prison, Ali joins forces with his cellblock’s “Alpha,” Morgan, to deal with the dark underbelly of the prison inmates and corrupt staff; he also reckons with the choices he and Amir have made that led them down this path. Both brothers must tread carefully in their new world, where they face unforeseen challenges like pack hierarchies, drugs, racism, and violence as they fight for their freedom.
VERDICT Truelove’s dark, gritty prison drama is heavy on angst and light on steaminess. Readers who enjoy intrigue and a new twist on shifters will enjoy this story.
