DEBUT Blood sprays, hearts break, and anthropomorphic underwear denies that the Holocaust ever happened in this dark, absurdly funny, and graphically violent thriller. While visiting Brazil, a beautiful young drug trafficker named Rosie cajoles her talking dog Denton into swallowing fifty-thousand dollars’ worth of cocaine in order to smuggle it into England. Loyal, lovelorn Denton acquiesces only for their flight home to crash into the Amazon basin, leaving him, Rosie, and her underwear, Pants Dude, the only survivors. As the trio wanders the rain forest in search of salvation, Denton sees the dire situation as an opportunity to prove his love; unfortunately, Pants Dude desires the narcotics hidden in the little dog’s stomach, and he’s willing to do whatever it takes to get what he wants. Flashbacks rounding out the cast’s backstory provide surreal laughs as well as psychological depth, resulting in an unexpectedly moving conclusion.
VERDICT Readers willing to roll with the bawdy humor and gore on display will find themselves increasingly engaged in a legitimately suspenseful plot and anxiously awaiting follow-ups from this wildly talented debut author.
