Colton 911: Desperate Ransom

Harlequin Romantic Suspense. (Colton 911: Chicago, Bk. 10). Nov. 2021. 288p. adapted by . ISBN 9781335759450. pap. $5.75.
At the beginning of the book, the 10th in the multi-author “Colton 911: Chicago” series (after Linda Warren’s Colton 911: Forged in Fire), lawyer Myles Colton’s marriage is already on the rocks—his wife Faith has grown weary of his long hours at the office. Finding out he’s taken on a case that puts both him and his family in danger nearly puts Faith over the edge. When their young son goes missing, they and the rest of the Coltons join forces to bring him home. But will Jackson’s safe return be enough to save their relationship? Though this book starts with the literal bang of a car crash, pacing soon becomes an issue. Two-thirds of the book is spent showing the precariousness of Myles and Faith’s relationship; the kidnapping and eventual ransom demand promised in the title all occur in the last third, which moves much more quickly.
VERDICT Fans of the series will undoubtedly have this one on their list, but new readers might be frustrated by the fact that the kidnapper’s identity isn’t revealed here.
