DEBUT Prepare for cults, killers, and classic 1980s nostalgia in the latest addition to the “Rewind or Die” series. Sylvaine’s debut follows Minnesota teenager Penny over the course of a horrific night as she discovers the terrifying secrets her local mall hides. The author provides a running score of classic songs that culminate in a playlist at the end of the book. Trashy and fun, this hits all the right notes of cheesy teen drama and spine-tingling scares that the gruesome cover promises. While it doesn’t have the literary depth of some recent popular horror, it makes up for it with sheer bloodthirsty delight.
VERDICT An excellent gateway book to readers looking to get into the horror genre. Recommend to readers who enjoyed previous “Rewind or Die” titles or fans of Adam Cesare’s Clown in a Cornfield, Stephanie Perkins’s There’s Someone Inside Your House, or Riley Sager’s Final Girls.
