Blind Tiger

Widdershins. (The Pride, Bk. 1). Mar. 2021. ebk. ISBN 9781941230480. $4.99. PARANORMAL ROMANCE
In 1920s Chicago, painfully naïve witch Sam and the jaded shape-shifting familiar Alistair (these terms and others are defined in a handy glossary at the front of the book) cross paths when Sam flees his emotionally cold family for the big city, where Alistair works for a speakeasy named the Pride. Their relationship grows after Sam’s cousin is murdered, prompting Alistair to offer help in navigating a world of magic and gangsters. Although the book is set in the 1920s, many of the characters, particularly the leads, have distinctly 21st-century sensibilities, leaving a feeling not unlike visiting a renaissance fair: fun and romanticized, with the understanding that the modern era is more civilized and preferred.
VERDICT A solid start to the series, although some readers may find it too quick a read.
