Curtis, Emmy. Free Fall. Forever Yours: Grand Central. (Elite Ops, Bk. 3). Jul. 2018. 163p. ebk. ISBN 9781478947967. $3.99. ROMANTIC SUSPENSE

This third title in Curtis’s “Elite Ops” series (after Aces Wild and Wingman) wastes no time on character development but starts immediately with an attempted kidnapping and “the good guys” needing to run from an evil military contracting firm. Casey Jacobs is an ex-military pilot now working for a private contractor. Col. Duke Cameron is the base commander where Casey’s firm had underwritten a military training mission from which two pilots have gone missing. Casey questions if it could have been the firm’s software, and her supervisor discreetly threatens her. When Duke witnesses some of the firm’s security people trying to abduct Casey, Casey and Duke take off together for a suspenseful race across the country.

Verdict Very thrilling, with lots of action and lots of sex. Recommend for those who read Julie Walker.—Susan Hayes, formerly with Chattahoochee Valley Libs., Columbus, GA

Kilraine, Lee. Give It Up. Lyrical Caress: Kensington. (Thorne Brothers, Bk. 1). Jul. 2018. 259p. ebk. ISBN 9781516108244. $2.99. CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE

The competition is fierce between Samantha Devine and Beckett Thorne when their respective design companies vie for a prestigious contract in Kilraine’s (Wanted: Mom for Christmas) new series. Beckett is the tough guy, taking care of his younger siblings as a child and bringing them together as adults to create Six Brothers Construction. He doesn’t have the luxury of relationships, especially not with stubborn, ambitious rival Samantha. That Sam needs the contract to enrich her reputation as badly as Beckett does only make them both more determined to win. Neither is prepared when they’re asked to work together, and those pesky memories of a hot one-night stand two years ago definitely don’t help ease the sexual—and professional—tension. The only way they will ever be able to settle their differences is with a no-strings-attached affair that will absolutely, in no way, involve a long-term bond.

Verdict The alternating perspectives between Sam and Beckett help draw readers into the characters’ emotional lives and add depth to an otherwise lighthearted romantic comedy. Fans of renovation romances and complex family dynamics will want to check out this new series.—Kathryn Howe, Saint John Free P.L., NB

Mecca, Cecelia. The Warrior’s Queen. Altiora. (Border Series, Bk. 6). Jun. 2018. 284p. ebk. ISBN 9781946510136. $3.99. HISTORICAL ROMANCE

Mecca (The Earl’s Entanglement) takes us back to the Borderland to learn the story of Clan Chief Graeme de Sowlis and Lady Gillian Lyndwood. Lady Gillian has always been the picture of obedience. She’s even willing to marry the old and wretched Lord Covington to save her family from ruin. But Gillian’s curiosity gets the better of her when she meets the tall and handsome Graeme. A moment of ill-advised passion in the garden quickly changes her future as they are forced to wed in order to preserve her reputation. What follows is a lust-filled adventure that just might turn into love. Mecca does a solid job of developing the characters and making readers invested in their futures. Despite this being the sixth book in the series, Mecca still finds ways to make each story unique, with this latest installment as enjoyable as the first.

Verdict A great read for anyone who enjoys historical romances, particularly set in 13th-century Scotland.—Sonnet Ireland, St. Tammany Parish P.L., Slidell, LA
