Barbara Rockenbach appointed Stephen F. Gates ’68 University Librarian at Yale University, Julie Garrison elected as ACRL Vice-President/President-Elect, Brian Hart is the new Director of the Forsyth County Public Library, NC, and more library people news.

Barbara Rockenbach head shotBarbara Rockenbach, currently the Associate University Librarian for research and learning at Columbia University, has been appointed as the next Stephen F. Gates ’68 University Librarian at Yale University, effective July 1.

Polly D. Boruff-Jones, most recently Dean of the Indiana University Kokomo Library, has been appointed as Dean of University Libraries at Oakland University, Rochester, MI, effective July 1.

Diane DeCesare, formerly Managing Editor of The Southern Quarterly and Curator of Manuscripts, Archives and Digital Collections at the University of Southern Mississippi, has been named the new Director of the Lamar County Library System, MS, replacing former director Phillip Carter.

The University Libraries at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has announced the one-year appointment of Alexandra (Sasha) Deyneka as Librarian for Art and Art History for the Sloane Art Library as of March 30.

She will become President-Elect in July and assume the presidency in July 2021 for a one-year term.

Samantha (Sam) Harlow, Online Learning Librarian and Assistant Professor for University Libraries at thhas been awarded the 2020 DLS Routledge Distance Learning Librarianship Conference Sponsorship Award by ACRL.

Brian Hart, former Deputy Director of the Greensboro Public Library, NC, is the new Director of the Forsyth County Public Library, NC, as of May 4.

Josh Schneider, previously Assistant University Archivist at Stanford University, CA, has been named to head the University Archives, the official repository for records of the university and its institutional memory.


Pellom McDaniels III, Curator of African American Collections at the Stuart A. Rose Manuscript, Archives, and Rare Book Library at Emory University, GA, died suddenly at his home on April 19, at age 52. McDaniels earned both his MA and PhD in American Studies from Emory’s Institute of Liberal Arts, after a career as a National Football League defensive lineman for the Kansas City Chiefs and Atlanta Falcons.

Peggy Sullivan, executive director of the American Library Association (ALA) from 1992–94; former Dean of the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at Rosary College, IL; Director and Professor, University Libraries, Northern Illinois University, IL; Assistant Commissioner, Chicago Public Library from 1977–81; and Director of the Knapp School Libraries Project; died of natural causes, at age 90, on April 13.
