Leigh, Tara. Rock Rebel. Forever Yours: Grand Central. (Nothing but Trouble, Bk. 3). Dec. 2018. 265p. ebk. ISBN 9781538712832. $3.99. CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE
Former disgraced TV star Verity Moore has her chance at redemption when she crosses over to singing and is signed by Travis Taggert, a famous L.A. agent known for discovering the hottest acts. Travis also represents the mega-huge sensation Nothing but Trouble (NBT) and puts Verity on as their opening act for their upcoming tour. Guitarist Dax Hughes can’t stop fantasizing about Verity ever since he ran into her in an elevator, but he’s carefully guarding his heart and knows he can’t mix business with pleasure. Their attraction is too strong to deny, and they eventually give in to it. Both Verity’s and Dax’s pasts collide in an unforeseeable manner that may threaten both the love and careers of this unstoppable duo.
VERDICT Since the first series offerings (Rock King; Rock Legend ), Leigh’s characterizations and writing have grown significantly, and most readers will find this latest foray to be a sexy read to devour. Addressing the timely #MeToo Movement also takes this story beyond typical romantic fluff.—Kara Kohn, Plainfield P.L., IL

Malcolm, Sally. Between the Lines. Carina: Harlequin. Dec. 2018. 297p. ebk. ISBN 9781488036200. $3.99. LGBTQIA, CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE
Itinerant surf instructor Luca Moretti returns home to the family inn, the Majestic, at his mother’s request. She plans to sell and retire to Florida, and Luca is positive the idea is solely his greedy, homophobic stepfather’s plan. Theo Wishart is in New Milton to scope out a property his father plans to add to his line of luxury resorts. Of course, it will mean demolishing the aging inn on the property and rebuilding, but it’s the perfect site. Buying the inn is Theo’s chance to prove himself to his father, but he didn’t expect to meet an aggravating, antagonistic surfer who’s determined to scotch the sale. And Luca didn’t expect the devil trying to buy his family home to be so appealing yet awkward. They have the chance to build a future at the Majestic, or let their romance turn into a summer fling that will die with the inn. Malcolm introduces a hero with dyspraxia, and his struggles are an integral part of the story.
VERDICT Malcolm follows up Perfect Day with a novel set in the same town and featuring the wedding of the characters from the first book as background. Either work can be read alone, although libraries owning Perfect Day will want this one. If the author’s name sounds familiar, she has also written several “Stargate SG-1” titles, so there may be some crossover readership.—Melanie C. Duncan, Washington Memorial Lib., Macon, GA

Rosemoor, Patricia. Animal Attraction. Tule. (Kindred Souls, Bk. 2). Jan. 2019. 184p. ebk. ISBN 9781949707326. $3.99. PARANORMAL ROMANCE/MYSTERY
When DeAndre Booker, alderman and vice mayor for the city of Chicago, is found dead from an apparent animal attack, Det. Ethan Grainger is called in to investigate. Ethan is immediately suspicious that the Kindred, the mafia of shape-shifters descended from Nephilim, are somehow involved when a poker chip from the casino the supernatural group runs is found in the victim’s pocket. For answers, Ethan calls on the one Kindred he trusts, Nuala Lazare. Of course, she is not eager to help Ethan since she blames him for the death of her former lover—Ethan’s deceased partner Shade Cross. Together, they must find a way to work through their shared grief and physical attraction to get to the bottom of this deep well of corruption plaguing the city and their own lives. Given that Nuala’s character is pregnant with Shade’s baby during the majority of the book, the plot that focuses on her growing relationship with Ethan and their desire to unravel the criminal underbelly of Chicago reads as a supernatural mystery, with only a splash of romance.
VERDICT This second book in Rosemoor’s “Kindred Souls” series (after Animal Instincts) is initially difficult to read as a stand-alone, but it does eventually begin to piece together.—Vicky Coffin, Salem Free P.L., CT
