Finely written and worth a second read, this novel would be a fantastic choice for book discussion groups. With complete faithfulness to the text, it could also make an excellent movie.
With a nod to W.E.B. Dubois's essay "The Talented Tenth," this debut novel revolves around the subtle theme of adults passing on knowledge to younger generations. Hubbard's voice mixes wry humor and superhero pop culture while addressing issues that continue to challenge our country's African American community. [Hubbard is a 2016 winner of the Rona Jaffe Foundation Writers' Award.—Ed.]
Thoroughly steeped in the Old Order Amish ways, this sweet and tender story teems with forgiveness, growth, and promise, and with babies on the way, it's a perfect story for the Christmas season and fans of Amish fiction. Hubbard (Harvest of Blessings) lives in St. Louis.
This is an uneven entry in a usually solid series. The production values are still high, but some missteps are taken. Recommended for lovers of old radio and hard-boiled detectives.
Sweet, romantic, and heartfelt, this trio of engaging novellas link the holidays with the current Amish craze and will have appeal far beyond the expected inspirational fan base. Hubbard, Long, and Beckstrand live in St. Paul; Hummelstown, PA; and Centerville, UT, respectively.
