Children and teens are visually oriented now more than ever, thanks to television, computers, and cell phones. Graphic novels and comics are a perfect complement to this trend. They encourage reading for pleasure and are a great way to entice reluctant readers, special needs students, and ESL learners to become interested in books. Graphic novels can also help teach story structure and promote understanding of character development and setting for advanced readers. This format can be used across the curriculum and can be a tool for improving the use of language, developing critical thinking skills, and promoting creativity. Three experts in the fields of teaching, programming, and graphic novels will help librarians, teachers, and parents learn about the benefits of graphic novels and give advice for their use with today’s visually-oriented kids through a webcast sponsored by Brodart and School Library Journal.

Panelists:

Katharine “Kat” Kan, Part-time school librarian, Panama City FL; Collection Development Librarian and graphic novels selector, Brodart Co.
Mike Pawuk, Teen Librarian, Cuyahoga County Public Library, Brooklyn Branch
John C. Weaver, Ph.D, English teacher, Williamsport Area High School

Moderator:
John Shableski, President, JeffCorwinConnect Publishing
