Out with the Old, In with the New: Transforming Libraries Through Weeding
SPONSORED BY: collectionHQ and Library Journal
Starts: Tuesday, October 4, 2011 - 12:00-1:00 PM EDT
Libraries are constantly looking for way to energize their space and collections to add appeal for patrons. A new building or a fresh coat of paint is a good start, but what about all the stuff on the shelves? What is taking up space there that is no longer needed, or relevant? Maybe your library transformation should begin with a thorough review of the items that are collecting dust, on both your physical and virtual shelves.
Panelists
Rebecca Vnuk, co-blogger with Karen Kleckner at ShelfRenewal, will be the moderator and lead presenter. She has held a variety of positions in libraries over the past 12 years, including Collection Development and Management experience. In 2010, she was awarded the prestigious Allie Beth Martin Award for excellence in Readers’ Advisory, and was named one of Library Journal’s Movers and Shakers. Rebecca will give an overview of weeding, talk about weeding of different formats (print, media) and about the new frontier, weeding ebooks.
Mary Kelly and Holly Hibner are public librarians in Michigan. They have worked together for over ten years and share a passion for books and libraries, and created the Awful Library Books website to share some of the cool (and honestly, not so cool) old books that are gracing library shelves everywhere. Mary and Holly will be discussing some of the ‘gems’ they’ve discovered in their quests, and offer some tips and therapies for those who approach the prospect of weeding with trepidation.
In 2010, Kathy Schalk-Greene, director of the Mount Laurel Library, worked as a consultant with four New Jersey public libraries, all in dire need of a makeover to better serve their customers. The four member “SWAT Team of Library Transformers” was created and funded by the NJ State Library on the recommendation of NJ State Librarian Norma Blake’s Blue Ribbon Task Force on the Future of Libraries. Kathy will be talking about how collection review processes were part of transforming these libraries, the best practices that have been put in place, and how the SWAT Team approach can be used in other libraries.
Ian Downie, Commercial Manager, will present a short overview of CollectionHQ, the leading collection performance improvement solution which is revolutionizing the way many public libraries select, manage and promote their collections. It is a proven product based on the powerful Evidence Based Stock Management (EBSM) methodology developed by public librarians in the UK over the past 18 years, which is now in use in dozens of libraries across North America. Ian will also moderate the Q&A portion of the webcast.
