LJ April 1, 2009 videonews2At the Jefferies fifth annual Internet and Media conference in New York this February, Netflix CFO Barry McCarthy said the company would "in the foreseeable future" be offering its online streaming service on a stand-alone basis; this, in response to the growing prevalence of mobile devices. Netflix customers currently pay a fixed monthly subscription fee for access to its DVD-by-mail service.

LJ April 1, 2009 videonews1Through its unique DVD subscription program available to libraries, universities, and individuals, the independent and foreign film distribution company Film Movement sends one film festival favorite—from Cannes, Sundance, Berlin, and others—to its approximately 1000 member libraries monthly. Each DVD contains one feature film and one short film as well as a newsletter and discussion questions. More info at www.filmmovement.com.

Since October 2008, Disney has been bundling DVDs and Blu-rays together with digital copies for a combined list price of approximately $40 (Blu-rays alone typically cost $35; currently a third of Disney's DVDs are sold with either the digital copy or the Blu-ray). Now, Variety reports, Fox, MGM, and Lionsgate will also soon be selling these DVD/Blue-ray/digital combos, beginning with Marley & Me, The Princess Bride, and Terminator 2, respectively.
