Mystery and history. Romance and horror. Literary efforts and fun reads that just plain pop. Fiction comes in many different types, which explains why this list of nearly 300 forthcoming first novels (February 1, 2011–August 31, 2011) is divided into nine handy groups. (Note that Westerns and graphic novels, with one title each, were folded into pop fiction and are indicated by parentheses.) Some of these works, from Taylor Stevens’s The Informationist, to Edward Conlan’s Red on Red, to Joe Henry’s Lime Creek, already come recommended. Check these out—and more—in LJ’s reviews.

Dear Barbara Hoffert, Many thanks for entering La Rochelle in the list above. May I point out though that it's a literary novel rather than a thriller? All the British reviews have acknowledged this! Very best wishes, Michael Nath

Roger Rheinheimer's first novel "Amish Snow" is quite the read. It's a story of a young amish boy who grows up with an abusive, alcoholic father (not what you would expect from the Amish who are generally peaceloving and godfearing folks). One day he flees home and has to make it on his own in the big city at the tender age of 15. It's all about his struggles in living in a non-amish world and trying to survive.

Like Michael Nath above, I too have written a book that is not a standard thriller. The Alphabet of Vietnam is just as much a literary work as it is a page turner. Not many thrillers have translations of feminist Vietnamese poetry or are interested in the parallels between the philosphies of Clausewitz and Maquis de Sade. But thanks for including me in the list at all.

La Rochelle by Michael Nath has just been shortlisted for the James Tait Black Memorial Prize, Britain's oldest literary prize.
