Karlen Chase has been appointed Digital Services and Circuit Librarian, Western New York Library Resources Council (WNYLRC), Buffalo. She previously was part-time Circuit Librarian for WNYLRC’s Hospital Library Services Program.

Terry Ehling is now Associate Director, Content Development and Publisher Relations, Project MUSE, as of August 1. Most recently, she was Scholarly Publishing Strategist, Cornell University Press.

Qun Fang, CFO, Mid-Continent Public Library (MCPL), Independence, MO, was designated CFO of the Year in the nonprofit organization category by Kansas City Business Journal. Fang was previously awarded four times a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence from the Government Finance Officers ­Association.

Rachel Fewell is the new Collection Services Manager, Denver Public Library. She most recently was Collection Development Manager, Anythink Libraries, Rangeview Library District, Thornton, CO.

Ronald Jenkins retired at the end of July from his position as Director, Logan Library, UT, after more than 30 years of service. His successor is Robert Shupe, formerly Director, Mohave County Library, Kingman, AZ.

Betty Drees Johnson, Library Director and Professor, Stetson University, DeLand, FL, will retire August 31 after 50 years of service. She began her career at Stetson University as Student Library Assistant in the 1950s and became Acquisitions Librarian in 1961. She subsequently went on to be Catalog Librarian and Head of Technical Services before being named Director in 2002.

Ed Kieczykowski, retired County Librarian, San Bernardino County, CA, a position he held for 17 years, has taken on a new assignment as the first Director of the Santa Clarita Public Library, CA. The city of Santa Clarita withdrew from the County of Los Angeles Public Library to form a three-branch system, which opened July 1.

Paula Kiely, Director, Milwaukee Public Library, was named a 2011 Woman of Influence by Milwaukee’s The Business Journal. Kiely was one of two winners in the Public Policy category, one of ten categories that attracted a total of 130 ­submissions.

Meg Knodl, Senior Librarian in Communications and Community Engagement, Hennepin County Library, Minneapolis, and a 2011 Library Journal Mover & Shaker, will devote one day a week as Coworking Librarian at CoCo, a Coworking and Collaborative Space. According to Knodl, she will be “helping coworkers with information needs and developing a community programming ­philosophy.”

Eric Maynard has joined the staff of the State Library of Ohio as Systems Analyst I, Information Systems and Technology Group. He formerly worked at ­Holmes County Public Library, Millersburg, OH.

Terry Metz, Library Director and Professor, U.S. Naval War College, Newport, RI, has been named University Librarian, Washington and Lee University, Lexington, VA, effective September 1. He succeeds Merrily Taylor, who retired in 2010.

Greg Romer is now Director, Newcomerstown Public Library, OH. He was Adult Services Librarian, Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library, KS.

Kristi Tornquist is now Chief University Librarian, South Dakota State University, Brookings, replacing David Gleim, who retired.

obituary
Alexandra “Sandy” Mason, former Spencer Librarian, Kenneth Spencer Research Library, University of Kansas, Lawrence, has died; she was 80. Mason began her career at the library in 1957. She was appointed Head of Special Collections in 1963 and became Spencer Librarian in 1975. She retired in 1999.
