An architect nationally known for his design of sustainable libraries has been named the first director of
sustainability for Indiana University Bloomington. William M. "Bill" Brown, head of library design and marketing for the 55-person Indianapolis firm Browning Day Mullins Dierdorf Architects will start the new job on March 2.
The new position builds on work by a volunteer task force and student interns. As director of sustainability, Brown aims to develop a coherent, campuswide sustainability program by coordinating academic, research, operations, and student activities. That involves environmental stewardship, energy conservation, applied environmental science and policy research, environmental literacy, and community outreach.
Much coverage in LJ
Brown wrote Future-Proof Design in the September, 15 2008 issue of LJ’s Library by Design supplement. He wrote The NetZero Energy Option in the May 15, 2007 issue of LJ’s Library by Design supplement. He wrote The New Green Standard for the December 2003 issue of LJ. And at LJ's second Design Institute, Brown described the multitude of green options.
Notable libraries
His notable libraries in the state include the Oaklyn Library in Evansville, the state’s only national award winning green roof building; the Lincoln Heritage Chrisney Branch Library, the state’s first net-zero energy public library in Indiana; and the Ohio Township Public Library in Newburgh, which features advanced active and passive solar design strategies.
Brown has been a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) consultant on ten projects in the past two years, including two projects with zero net energy consumption. He co-chairs the Indianapolis-Marion County Green Commission, chairs the Indiana Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council, and serves as secretary of the Indiana Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
Other universities, such as Harvard University, Boston University and the University of Chicago, have recently hired sustainability directors, though not all are architects.
