Restructuring or retrenching?

LJ Staff -- Library Journal, 01/26/2010

There have been several reports of layoffs and consolidations among book retailers and wholesalers; it's hard to tell whether it represents restructuring or retrenching.

Publishers Weekly reports on a realignment at BarnesandNoble.com, involving both layoffs and new hires. PW also reports on the resignation by Ron Marshall as CEO of Borders Group, who made many changes at the retailer but still fell behind Barnes & Noble in sales.

Beyond that, Ingram Content Group, in La Vergne, TN, laid off 57 workers, about 3% of its staff there, according to the Tennesseean, as a result of a consolidation last year. PW reports the departure of Kelley Maier, senior VP of product management & marketing.
