ALA-APA: Call for Salary Analyses, Professional Development Opportunities
Jennifer Pinkowski -- Library Journal, 10/10/2007
Write a 1200-word paper analyzing the ALA-APA’s 2007 salary data and get a free copy of a survey. The organization is putting out a call for paper proposals concerning either the ALA-APA Salary Survey—Librarian: Public and Academic or the ALA-APA Salary Survey—Non-MLS: Public and Academic; up to five writers will receive a free copy of one of the surveys in exchange for a paper of national interest that either compares or describes data. Comparison papers might measure library and nonlibrary positions, while descriptive papers might assess the overall statistics. Past survey data may be made available to authors. The 2006 winning papers were published in the ALA-APA newsletter Library Worklife: HR E-News for Today’s Leaders. The deadline for proposals is November 16.In other ALA-APA news, 12 new candidates have been selected for the Certified Public Library Administrator program (CPLA), a post-MLS certification professional development program offering 35 courses and nine management topics. The addition of the dozen candidates brings the total number of CPLA participants to 87 professionals in 30 states and the Bahamas. The voluntary certification program is for public librarians with at least three years of supervisory experience and an ALA-accredited advanced degree. Now in its second year, the CPLA offers courses provided by ALA divisions such as the Library Administration and Management Association and the Public Library Association and institutions including the University of North Texas and the Graduate School of Library and Information Science, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Candidates are admitted quarterly and have five years to meet seven of nine library administrator competencies. Classes are available online, in person, or at ALA conferences. The next deadline for applications is December 7.
