American Public University System, a nationally and regionally accredited distance-learning institution with over 70,000 registered students, is currently seeking to fill a Director of Libraries position.
Synopsis of Role:
The Director of Libraries manages a headquarters library and the world-wide operations of the University Online Library, including an industry-leading group of librarians. These operations demand a wide range of expertise from copyright and information literacy to automated reference and electronic resources. The incumbent is expected to be a scholarly entrepreneur to help ensure the University's academic reputation through innovative programs, classroom-driven collection development, faculty engagement, proactive vendor negotiations and personal scholarship at the forefront of academic librarianship in the Web Era.
Essential Functions:
- Manage and enhance the University's Online Library by keeping with professional standards and maintaining a position as an industry leader.
- Oversee the development and daily operations of the University's land-based library in Charles Town, WV.
- Coordinate the cost-effective use of library materials for classroom use in conjunction with the Course Materials Manager.
- Recruit and supervise professional library staff in a manner commiserate with significant added value to the University for those positions.
- Administer student and faculty information literacy training.
- Advise the Dean and serve the University community as an expert resource for copyright, electronic media, information literacy and other ventures.
- Work with faculty, staff and students to proactively build academic excellence and the University's reputation.
Critical Skills and Job Complexity:
- Advanced knowledge of Web-based Academic Librarianship.
- Specialized awareness of electronic publishing and Web resources.
- Maintenance of a customer service orientation focused on advancing University students, faculty and alumni.
- Negotiation skills and cost-benefit awareness to ensure academic excellence within a for-profit University.
- High level of problem solving, decision making ability and proactive engagement.
- Flexibility, including the ability to travel and positively represent the University in a variety of venues.
- Web design and office automation software proficiency.
- Recognized scholarly credentials and professional standing.
Preferred Education and Experience:
- Master's Degree in Library and Information Science required, Ph.D. preferred.
- Extensive experience as a senior manager in an academic library or archives setting.
Work Environment and Physical Demands:
- Standard office environment in Charles Town, WV.
