Review
ETHERIDGE, Eric. Breach of Peace: Portraits of the 1961 Mississippi Freedom Riders. Atlas. 2008. 224p. illus. index. ISBN 978-0-9777433-9-1. $45. HIST Etheridge, a Mississippi native and former Rolling Stone editor, has compiled a remarkable book. He has collected the mug shots of 328 black and white Freedom Riders who were arrested in Jackson, MS, between May 24 and September 13, 1961, and charged with breach of the peace for trying to desegregate transportation terminals in the city. Those arrested ranged from the famous leaders like John Lewis to foot soldiers like college student Robert Heller who believed he “didn’t do anything heroic” but “just added [his] body to a movement.” In addition to the mug shots, Etheridge includes recent photographs of 84 of the civil rights activists, along with brief biographies and small excerpts from interviews with them. The work concludes with 20 extended interviews. We see a collective portrait marked by a combination of fear, good humor, and above all extraordinary courage and commitment in the face of virulent and sometimes violent racism. This absolutely inspirational work—one of the most powerful experiences a reader can have —is highly recommended for all libraries.—Anthony Edmonds, Ball State Univ., Muncie, IN
