“If you want to send a message, call Western Union,” movie-studio honcho Jack Warner used to tell directors. But even before Hollywood’s heyday, filmmakers dealt with social themes—a trend on display in this sweeping collection of 48 films ranging from shorts to features. Loan sharking, racism, infectious diseases, immigration, poverty, prohibition, and unionism are just a smattering of the subjects addressed in these early films—both silent and sound—which are accompanied by new musical scores and expert commentaries. Ninety years before Knocked Up barely referenced abortion in a comedy, Where Are My Children? tackled the topic head-on in a drama. In the biggest-name entry, Christians take on atheists in Cecil B. DeMille’s The Godless Girl, which shines a light on reform schools. Although some films are blatantly propagandistic, others couch their points in reasonably entertaining stories. Whether they “telegraphed” them or not, early filmmakers weren’t afraid to send a message. Supplemented by a booklet of program notes, this scrupulously restored compilation serves as a historical chronicle and a real treat for serious cinema fans. For most collections.
