  • Spain's Planeta Prize Again Goes to a Spanish Author
Earlier this week, Spain's most lucrative literary prize, the Premio Planeta de Novela, was awarded to author and journalist Juan José Millás (b. Valencia, 1946) for El Mundo ("The World"), which was inspired by the author's move to Madrid when he was a child. The author, a columnist for Spain's daily newspaper, El país, told the press that the winning work was a "fictionalized autobiography or biographical novel" about a preteen named Juanjo Millás "who lives on a street and whose only dream is to escape from it; when he does, he finds that street is everywhere."

Oprah Picks Cholera for Book Club
Earlier this month, media mogul Oprah Winfrey picked Colombian writer Gabriel García Márquez's Love in the Time of Cholera (El amor en los tiempos del cólera; Vintage) as her 59th Book Club selection. Originally published in 1985 by Colombia's Oveja Negra Editores, the classic tale of unrequited love is set in 19th Century Colombia and centers on a "fifty year, nine months, and four days" love triangle. A film version, starring Spain's Javier Bardem, is scheduled to premiere on November 16.

    Miami Celebrates Literature in Translation
One of the nation's largest literary events, the Miami Book Fair International (MBFI) will host more than 60 Spanish and Latin American writers this year, including Luis Leante [Mira si yo te querré ("See How Much I Love You"), Alfaguara, 2007], César Vidal [El testamento del pescador ("The Fisherman's Testament"), Rayo/Planeta, 2007], and Álvaro Vargas Llosa [El regreso del idiota ("Return of the Idiot"), Random House Mondadori, 2007]. Additionally, on November 8th, the MBFI has joined forces with BookExpo America (BEA) to present the Translation Marketplace, a one-day summit on world literature and translation. Sponsored by Críticas, Publishers Weekly, and Library Journal, the seminar is limited to editors, publishers, literary agents and scouts, and others in the trade, and will address an array of issues, such as world literature, foreign rights, and licensing. The MBFI will take place November 4-11.

    F&G Editores—Empowering the People
When you first meet Raúl Figueroa, you're struck by the intensity emanating from his brown eyes. He is a serious man on a serious quest—to play a key role in making Guatemalans more literate by publishing books that will help them comprehend what is going on in Guatemala, a beautiful, surreal country in which 200,000 people died during a recently concluded 36-year civil war, and where some 300 people die monthly as victims of gang warfare or femicide, or are killed during petty crimes or simply for speaking their minds. Críticas recently spoke to the founder of this socially conscious publishing house to learn of the many ways he's trying to help his compatriots understand and overcome their nation's difficult history and build a promising future for the publishing industry in Central America.
