Crime and Guilt—
De Santis & Cueto On Their Award-Winning Works
An old hand at Argentina's literary scene, Juan Pablo de Santis recently embarked on a long Latin American book tour after winning the first Premio Iberoamericano Planeta- Casa de América de Narrativa, the new literary prize created by Spain's publishing giant Grupo Planeta and the Spanish association Casa de América. "This [prize] is a great opportunity to reestablish the editorial links between Latin American countries," De Santis told Críticas. Peruvian Alonso Cueto, prize finalist, agrees. "[The prize] responds to the awareness that there is a community of Spanish-speaking readers, rather than groups of readers from different countries," he says, adding that thanks to major publishing houses, such as Planeta, "writers from diverse Latin American countries can be read not only in their places of origin but in many other Spanish-speaking regions. This is a relatively recent phenomenon."
