The Big Apple was the home of this year's BookExpo America (BEA), May 31–June 3 at the Jacob Javits Convention Center. Approximately 30,000 visitors made it to the publishing capital, about 8000 of whom were registered book buyers (booksellers and librarians). Though the usual key players in the U.S. Spanish-language book industry were all at the Spanish Pavilion—which was sponsored by Críticas magazine—Spain's publishing giant Planeta was notably absent.

Indie Publishers Honored at the 9th International Latino Book Awards
HarperCollins and Villegas Editores were, yet again, the big winners of this year's International Latino Book Awards. Published largely by its Rayo imprint, HarperCollins's 11 winners included El dinero que hay en tí (The Money in You; 2006) for Best Business Book (Spanish), Tú. The Colombian publishing house received accolades for eight of its titles, including Púberman (2006) for Best Education Children's Book (Spanish), Nostradamus (2006) for Best New Age Book (English), and Bogotá 360, Inside the City (2006) for Best Arts Book (English).

Thomas Nelson Seals Shared Distribution Partnership with Océano
Nashville based Thomas Nelson signed an agreement with Mexico's Editorial Océano for the exclusive and reciprocal distribution of Spanish-language titles in their respective markets in the United States and Mexico. Larry Downs, VP and publisher of Grupo Nelson, Thomas Nelson's Spanish-language imprint, told Críticas they believe this partnership provides a "large opportunity to market the products we believe complement [what] we offer." Downs said that "distribution with a trusted partner" in another country is an effective way of reaching a "marketplace...you have been trying to manage from across the border."

    OQO Editora—Never-ending Imagination
Consider, for just one storytime moment, what you think a children's book can do. That might just be enough to convince you of OQO Editora's singular concept: picture books as art books, stories as "never-ending tales," books as beautiful objects, all with kids directly informing a rich creative process. The two-year-old independent kids press is based in Pontevedra, a small Galician city nestled in a corner of Spain just above Portugal. The name OQO comes from the Galician oco, meaning hollow, as in a space to be filled with imagination. Cofounders Eva Mejuto (international promotions), Editor Marisa Núñez, and Designer Belén García fashion themselves a collective of like-minded kids-book fans. "We don't like to emphasize names," says Mejuto. "The real protagonists are the books."
