    WebJunction Diversity Fair Scholarship Winner Announced
    Sara Peté—adult services librarian at Olympia Timberland Library—has won WebJunction's Spanish Language Outreach (SLO) Program's Diversity Fair Scholarship. She will attend the American Library Association (ALA) Annual Conference in Washington, DC, from June 21-27. WebJunction will cover all conference fees and additional expenses. On June 23, Peté will present her successful ESL Tutoring project for Spanish speakers at the Diversity Fair.

    The World Book Capital Picks the Best Latin American Writers Under 39
    Bogotá World Book Capital and the Hay Festival—the international cultural organization which held it's annual celebration in Bogotá this year—announced late last month the 39 most important Latin American writers under 39 years of age. The event took place during the 20th Feria Internacional del Libro Bogotá (Bogota International Book Fair), which ran April 19-May 1. The 39 authors were selected from 200 finalists by a jury of three prominent Colombian novelists: Piedad Bonnett, Hector Abad Faciolince, and Oscar Collazos.

    Pablo De Santis Wins Planeta-Casa de América Award
    Argentinian Pablo de Santis's Enigma en París ("Enigma in Paris") was awarded with the first Premio Iberoamericano Planeta-Casa de América on Monday April 23 in Bogotá, UNESCO World Capital of the Book. The occasion coincided with World Book Day and the Feria Internacional del Libro Bogotá, which took place April 19-May 1. De Santis's work was selected from 618 manuscripts; the author will receive $200,000.

    The Census Bureau predicts that in just 43 years, Hispanics, the fastest-growing minority group in the United States, will account for a quarter of the country's population. An increasing number of Spanish-language readers are making up America's general market, and they are an upwardly mobile set at that. Accordingly, mainline publishers are doing their best to court this burgeoning demographic, and superstore chains like Barnes & Noble and Wal-Mart have expanded their Spanish offerings.
