I love coffee—table books-especially photo collections of rock stars. Jim Marshall's Trust (Omnibus) and Gail Buckland's Who Shot Rock & Roll: A Photographic History, 1955-Present (Knopf), both just out, remind me not only why I love music but also why we need books. To freeze important and electrifying moments; to stand still while the world whirls on. Our 2009 Best Books aspire to do just that. Look for a sneak peak of our list (still in the making) in the Nov. 19 edition of BookSmack!Heather McCormack, Editor (follow me on Twitter at @hmccormack and @LJBookReview)

  • The Fall of the Berlin Wall: 20 Years Later
Twenty years ago this November, the world changed when the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) responded to increasing Eastern bloc unrest by permitting its citizens to cross into West Germany. The iron curtain, manifested to the world most clearly by the concrete Berlin Wall, fell. Five new books examine the context and consequences of that event. more » » »
  • Top Twenty Holds from the New York Public Library
Behind every best seller you're likely to find a library hold. See what patrons are lining up to read at the New York Public Library, where the nonfiction requests range from Steve Harvey's long-popular dating guide to two books on overeating to Ted Kennedy's final memoir. more » » »

  • Parenting Short Takes: Natural Birth, Bilingualism & Slowing Down
Parenting literature often leads with titles that plead for a return to the "good old days" of well-mannered kids, more free time, family dinners, and a greater sense of community. Solid offerings continue to outline the benefits of slowing down and playing nicely with others, but are we heeding the advice? Are we living to work or working to live? more » » »
  • Prepub Exploded: March 2009, Pt. 2
March 2010 promises lots of thrillers, but I’ll recommend that you take a special look at Philippe Djian’s Unforgivable and Danielle Trussoni’s Angelology. And though nonfiction offers lots of religious meditation, it leads off with Josh Axelrad’s far-from-pious Repeat Until Rich: A Professional Card Counter’s Chronicle of the Blackjack Wars. more » » »
  • 35 Going on 13: Retro Redux
This past year, I have dedicated much column space to new authors and stories. Yet there are some books that stand the test of time, finding new readers 20 and even 30 years after their original publication. Here is but a small sampling of books with that rare quality—an unexpired freshness date. more » » »

  • The Word on Street Lit
This month’s street lit picks focus on characters who struggle to redeem their pasts. While these young men and women may make bad choices, they do take the time and energy to turn their lives around. As we prepare for the holiday season, these titles will remind readers of how family, friends, and faith can play important roles in life’s successes as well as in recovering from its failures. more » » »
