Editor's Note

CwC + RtU = a dynamic library
This equation comes from a blog post by Eric Schnell, associate professor at the Ohio State University Libraries, and showed up in my feed reader the same day as news of a number of budget cuts and reports of mace being used on students gathered outside of the Lupton Library, University of Tennessee, Chattanooga. In this elegant equation, CwC stands for "Connect with Community," and RtU for "Reasons to Use."

It's simple, but it also holds up as a nice distillation of the academic library ideal. Perhaps most radically, dollar signs don't figure anywhere in the equation. Library funds are absolutely critical, and that's why we track them to the extent that we do, but they're also a means to an end. The way I see it, Schnell's equation serves as a useful reminder that there's a level of service removed from all of the day-to-day hardships so prevalent of late. As always, enjoy the Newswire, and keep us posted on how these stories are affecting you and your community. — Josh Hadro, Editor, Academic Newswire
