The bookstore fad Another “fad” has raised its ugly head in the library profession in an attempt to legitimize the very existence of the public library (Barbara Fister, “The Dewey Dilemma,” LJ 10/1/09, p. 22–25). Now we are told that remaking the library into a “bookstore” format will bring the masses to our threshold as never before.

People By Staff - 10/15/2009
Shane Beers has joined the University of Michigan (UM) Library, Ann Arbor, as its first Digital Preservation Librarian. He will work closely with a team of experts to ensure the long-term preservation of UM's digital collections. Hannah Bennett has joined Princeton University, NJ, as Architecture Librarian.

Still looking for a job I want to thank John Berry ("The New Refugees," Blatant Berry, LJ 9/1/09, p. 8) for his insight into what new librarians face going into the unknown world of librarianship. We learn the skills that we need, however, it is very difficult to show them off when most libraries expect one to three years of experience plus the MLS degree.

They walked out into a job market where, as one fall 2008 University of South Florida grad put it in a letter to LJ, "What does it take to get a public library job? I know the economy is bad and that budgets are tight.
