Zines from a Tennessee Public Library: Or, Stop Being a Wuss and Start a Collection Already! Edited by Jenna Freedman - 05/02/2009
Jerianne Thompson reviews five zines you have no excuse not to include in your library because they're very popular at a small public library in Tennessee. Many libraries start zine collections as a way to attract and serve young adults—teens and twenty-somethings—who may feel their library has little to offer matching their interests. Through zines, we can provide access to information and topics that are limited within our general collection.

Last year was remarkable not only for the financial difficulties faced by many publishers but also for the quality of new launches in the face of tough times. Without question, the magazine market is volatile. Magazine publishers and editors must innovate to survive and compete in an online information marketplace.

Zines: From Brainscan to Ker-Bloom! Edited by Jenna Freedman - 03/05/2009
Librarians often mistakenly group all zines with serials, perhaps because the word zine derives from magazine (either directly or with a stop on fanzine). Although many zines are one-offs, we thought it might be nice to dedicate one column to serial zines. The five reviewed zine series have at least ten issues, which is a significant accomplishment given the ephemeral nature of zines and the transitory state of many of their authors.
