LSTA Bucks--AgainApril 28, 2009 While there's little direct money for libraries in the economic stimulus package, there's still time to weigh in on funding for LSTA. The American Library Association (ALA) Washington Office has just released a new action alert, asking library advocates to contact their Senators to urge them to sign on to the letter being circulated by Senators Jack Reed (D-RI) and Olympia Snowe (R-ME) in support of LSTA funding (at $300 million) and Improving Literacy Through School Libraries Program ($100 million).According to Sheketoff, the letter needs a substantial number of Senators to sign on to "show vocal support." Programs without such support, she says, "are in danger of being cut." As of today, nine Senators have signed on. Last year, for 2009 LSTA, Reed and then-Senator Joe Biden garnered 47 signers. Already on board this year, as of April 28, in addition to Senators Reed and Snowe, are Senators Kohl, Lautenberg, Cardin, Gillibrand, Lieberman, Wyden, and Boxer. You can get your Senator to sign on til May 13, the deadline for the letter to go to the Labor, Health and Human Services and Education Appropriation Subcommittee. When you contact your Representative, you must ask him or her to call Andrew Odgren with Senator Reed at 202-224-4642 or Mathew Hussey with Senator Snowe at 202-224-5344. Early this month, Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-AZ) made the same kind of pitch in the House. Posted by Francine Fialkoff on April 28, 2009 | Comments (0)
