What Would Gumby Do? Read Xpress Reviews!
May 13, 2008

On the eve of his retirement from full-time work in 2006, John N. Berry III gave me a bendy Gumby figurine that he'd found while cleaning out his office. This little dude has become my official office gewgaw (for more, see LJ's "Offices Realia" album on Facebook), not to mention the unofficial cheerleader for our Xpress Reviews.

Why, you ask? Because some people still don't respect the web as a platform for book reviews, and I need the occasional pep talk from an inanimate object. So hateful are the haters out there who think that web sites are where editors bury evaluations of C- and D-list books. So, so not true in LJ's case. This week's batch is particularly rich, with the latest from Lewis Black, Augusten Burroughs, Laura Dave, and Dean Koontz. Read 'em and weep. And come back every Tuesday for more.

Delighted to see Gumby again. Glad he's still haunting LJ.
