Paulo Coelho Experimental Witch Film Competition

June 24, 2008

Paulo Coelho’s The Witch of Portobello, adapted into a MySpace user–generated film? It’s the stuff of movies, I know, but Variety reports that Coelho has indeed invited budding filmmakers and musicians across the globe (the project is being promoted in 30 countries) to submit to his MySpace account their own musical scores and narrative interpretations of his best-selling novel. He’d rather his books not go the usual Hollywood-mogul route, he told Variety, because it’s readers, after all, who “create the movie in their head.”

(Incidentally, this is not MySpace's premier film-by-committee venture. Faintheart, born of a competition launched by the social networking site in February 2007 and hitting UK theaters this September, is being billed as the world’s first user-generated feature film. And it truly is its own peculiar breed of Me-Generation magic: MySpacers had a say in everything from director and soundtrack to casting, script, and marketing campaign.)
