Highly Recommended: Ron McLarty, Traveler
April 1, 2008

As I’ve said before, I always like finding new authors to read. Awhile back I plucked Ron McLarty’s Traveler from this month’s crate of Penguin paperbacks for my Classic Returns column. A few years ago I wrote a story about Stephen King praising McLarty’s first novel The Memory of Running, which was released initially as an audiobook because McLarty, an actor who narrated audios, couldn’t find a publisher. Once Uncle Stevie took up his cause, they came knocking (surprise, surprise—bravo, Uncle Stevie!).

I don’t know about Memory, but Traveler knocked my socks off. I loved it! The story itself was fine enough, but the characters were outstanding, even the small ones. He just nailed every one of them. Alas, we seem not to have reviewed it (at least I couldn’t find it by searching the LJ homepage, but it’s hard to find anything there because our searching capabilities admittedly suck), but absolutely buy this book for your collections and read it yourselves.

You are so right about "Traveler"! I reviewed it for FEAST's fall 2007 issue as I thought it a real find. Of course, I've been an ardent fan of McLarty's since "Memory." And don't miss his upcoming "Art in America" this summer-- Rosemary Carstens
