From Page to Screen: Dennis Lehane's The Given Day
June 20, 2008

Dennis Lehane's eagerly anticipated historical epic, Any Given Day,  hasn't been published yet but already Hollywood has come calling. Variety reports that Columbia Pictures has acquired rights to the novel, and Spiderman director Sam Raimi will direct. HarperCollins will release the novel September 23.  Look for our review in the August print issue of Library Journal.

Hollywood certainly loves Boston's golden boy, having adapted  two of his novels into acclaimed films, Mystic River and Gone, Baby GoneAnd Martin Scorsese is in the process of filming Shutter Island, now renamed Ashcliffe, starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

But did you know that Lehane had once written, directed,  and produced an independent film, Neighborhoods? Several years ago I went downtown to the Tribeca Film Center for a screening hosted by the author. I remember thinking the film, still a work in progress, wasn't half bad and showed promise. Unfortunately Lehane never found a distributor.

I'm reading an advance copy and loving it. I work at a small library in a suburb, South Gate, in L.A. County, CA.
