NYU Demolishing Provincetown Playhouse!
April 30, 2008

Caught this little item in the paper and wanted to puke. New York University is tearing down the Provincetown Playhouse to build an extension for its law school! I’m as much for progress as the next guy, but this is sacrilege. The Provincetown Playhouse is where my old drinking buddy Eugene O’Neill, Edna St. Vincent Millay, and Edward Albee all presented their early works. It played a large role in the creation of 20th century American theater and launched a Nobel Prize-winning playwright. It’s a piece of American literary history and should be preserved. And for a university of all places to want to destroy it is disgusting.

Yeah, that’s what we need, more shysters. I say knock down NYU law school instead. Bastards.

NYU's logo should be the Pallidium dorm with a dollar bill and not the historic Washington Square Arch because they continue to destroy our historic city. www.suzannahbtroy.blogspot.com

Michael - That was a great piece of writing you did on behalf of the Provincetown Playhouse. I encourage you to write the Board of Trustees, and all politicians. Gene O'Neill would be proud of you. Gail Cohen
