Street Lit, Old and New
March 18, 2008

A few weeks ago in
Publishers Lunch a small news item announced
Kensington's acquistion of most of the publishing assets of
Holloway House, the "pioneer of original street lit fiction." I fowarded this to Vanessa Morris, our co-columnist (with Rollie Welch) of
LJ's new online-only The Word on Street Lit column.Vanessa was surprised and thrilled by the news, writing in an email: "This is MAJOR. Holloway House has not allowed ANY publishing house to mess with it for over 40 years. They are the original and only publisher of
Donald Goines's books. An amazing development. I think it's wonderful."
As the
Motown Writers Network reports, the acquisition includes 400 backlist titles that will become part of a new Kensington imprint. called Holloway House Classics, but Holloway House and the heirs of Robert Beck, better known as
Iceberg Slim, will retain the rights to seven Iceberg Slim books, including
Trick Baby and
My Life as a Pimp, which Kensington will distribute.
In the meantime, check out the new heirs of Goines and Iceberg Slim reviewed in Vanessa's debut
The Word on Street Lit No. 2, now online.
