It's A Curved World After All
October 7, 2008

Yesterday's Op-Ed piece by David Brooks on our global economic instability refers to David M. Smick's new book, The World is Curved: Hidden Dangers to the Global Economy as an "astonishingly prescient book."

In LJ's review of it last month, Lawrence Maxted called it "first rate; highly recommended for all public and academic libraries."  Smick is founding editor of The International Economy, a magazine itself described as "ahead of the curve."

While in earlier weeks, Smick's book may have appealed only to more specialized readers, libraries are likely to find interest in it increasing by the day, and doubly so with more readers seeking their books at libaries as economic worries deepen.

In short, you don't have to be David Brooks to gain value from Smick; he writes clearly for more and more of us.

Karl Helicher commented:

Another book readers would find interesting is SERVANTS OF WAR, by Rolf Uessler, to be published in December by Soft Skull Press. He traces the emergences of Private Military Corporations (PMCs), which fight in most, if not all, wars, including Iraq and Afghanistan. Such organizations benefit from Globalism in that countries that no longer have the resources or the personnel to fight wars, outsource their military forces, security, and logistics. Blackwater and Halliburton are two organizations that have benefited from these arragements. PMC's fighting forces are often mercenaries who are not governed by the same rules that apply to national armed forces. Those who have not benefited from PMC's include inmates at Gitmo and Abu Ghraib.
