Fiction Will Bleed
March 21, 2008

Let the record show that I do not abide violence against books (as dramatized in my current read, Fahrenheit 451), but that I wholeheartedly endorse and encourage feigning violence toward books when it's for the purposes of spoofing LJ's traditional review model (i.e., one book, one review). I am, of course, talking about our new Tag Team Review series, in which two librarians take on one book. Thus far, we've only tackled nonfiction (Ultimate Blogs and Campaigning for President), but next week fiction in the form of Andre Dubus III's The Garden of Last Days (June, Norton) will take a beating from Joy Humphrey and Jeanne Bogino.

In the meantime, enjoy this totally choice photo of two dogs (Oscar, left, and Delilah, right) fighting over a stuffed duck toy.

Dear Heather, I think your idea of offering two reviews for the same book is an excellent one. It provides fairness and balance to the reviewing process. During the years I worked as a librarian, I did numerous reviews for LJ and hope I treated each book fairly. But the process would benefit from having more than one reviewer read and comment on the same work. It is unfortunate that LJ cannot review more of the books sent in by publishers. I felt disappointment that my own recent novel was ignored. But obviously the sheer volume makes it impossible to review every quality book submitted. That's no stuffed duck toy, that's a review copy of some terrible Robin Cook thing (is there any other kind?). And the white dog is the albino ref.
