Roxy MusicMarch 11, 2009 Mercifully left on the cutting room floor of my most recent column for Library Journal (LJ 3/1/09), Glam Rock: Oh! You Pretty Things, was a brief digression about how important Roxy Music's 1972 appearnce on the BBC's Top of the Pops was to British popular music for the next few decades. Looking like a bunch of gaudy, stick-figure aliens, playing music that still takes a few listens to fully digest, Roxy Music drew a firm line in the sand between "What Came Before" and "Now." Brian Eno, in particular, draws the eye in with his androgynous airs, mad scientist music console and Marlene Dietrich wardrobe. Besides corrupting countless unsuspecting kids watching "the telly," Roxy's show amped up the visual template for glam rock up several notches, went a long way towards birthing both British punk, as well as Britpop later on, captivated David Bowie, and brough both Bryan Ferry and Brian Eno into the public eye for the first time—where they both still reside.Let's watch: And you can watch Billy Murray performing a drunken karaoke version of Roxy's "More Than This" during Lost in Translation right here. Essential Listening: Roxy Music. For Your Pleasure. Virgin Records. 1973. Roxy Music. Country Life. Virgin Records. 1974. Roxy Music. Siren. Virgin Records. 1975. Also note that the first few Brian Eno and Bryan Ferry solo albums are quite enjoyable, too. Posted by Matthew Moyer on March 11, 2009 | Comments (4)

In response to: Roxy Music Bernard Brannigan commented: 2009 should be quite interesting- apparently the new Roxy album(with both Ferry and Eno in the line-up)is at the mixing stage at the moment.

In response to: Roxy Music Matthew Moyer commented: I hope the new album sees the light of day soon, this "reunion" is something the Eno and Roxy camps have been talking about for a couple of years now.

In response to: Roxy Music LibrarianI commented: Ah, it's nice to know I'm not the only librarian who loves Eno's music. And I get to read this on work time!
