Scitopia: It’s Free, and It’s Growing
May 30, 2008
My Oct. 18, 2007 post announced the official launch of Scitopia, the science and technology federated vertical search portal. At that time, 15 scientific and technological societies were participating and contributing primarily peer-reviewed journal content and conference proceedings to the database. I just got word from my Scitopia contact that they’ve added six new content partners (the largest content addition since the site’s launch), so the total number of digital libraries searched by Scitopia is now 21.
The six new content partners are: The Royal Society, the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), the International Union of Crystallography (IUCr), the Audio Engineering Society (AES), and the Society for Information Display (SID). Content in the file’s archive goes back as far as 1665 with the addition of the Royal Society’s material, which includes such significant scientific papers as Isaac Newton's invention of the reflecting telescope and the first research paper published by Stephen Hawking.
If you haven’t yet taken a look at Scitopia, I recommend that you do, and if your library doesn’t yet link directly to it from your electronic resources page, you may do your researchers a favor by adding such a link. This file is a win-win collaboration of and for the sciences.
More as it happens,
Cheryl
