The Online World of CQ
May 4, 2007
The June 1st LJ has my review of CQ Global Researcher with an enthusiastic Bottom Line. I wanted to add a bit to it about the PLUS Archive, which offers “3,000 additional in-depth reports [beyond CQ Researcher], expanding coverage from 1923 to the present.” This translates into a resource that covers the major social issues in America as far back as 1923.
My search for “prohibition,” found 699 reports. The first (from October 31, 1928), “the Social and Economic Effects of Prohibition,” is structured differently from current CQ reports -- it’s not divided into Overview, Pro/Con, Timeline, etc. -- but is one long, incredibly rich report. Here’s a taste of content: “American Consumption of Alcoholic Beverages” (with annual per capita figures from 1900-1919); the American liquor bill from 1900 to 1911; “Prohibition and the Wage Earner,” (with a table from 1914-1927); a section: “The Decline in Pauperism 1880 – 1923,” and much more, with detailed tables. This is one-stop gold mine for Prohibition study – but the information here has much wider applicability for American historical and social research, with tabular information reaching back even farther than 1923. And each report has an Issue Tracker sidebar to related reports tracing the issue forward in time. A free trial to the CQ Electronic Library is available. And if it sounds like I’m really enthusiastic about these CQ products – I am!
More as it happens,
Cheryl
