OK, Sony, Here’s What You Can Do to Make It Up to Us
September 25, 2007

Just to prove that dumb advertising is a competitive sport, Sony upped the ante with their ad for the Sony Reader, here displayed in a Flickr photo taken at LAX. Comments about the ad are showing up on library-related sites like Teleread, Dear Author, and LISNews, and a boycott of the reader among librarians has been suggested.

So I did a little web noodling, and found this interesting press release from Sony back in September 2006 noting that, “Sony Will Donate $10 for Each Reader Purchased During Breast Cancer Awareness Month,” – up to $40,000. More noodling found word about this year’s Sony promotion for the pink VAIO limited time offer, in which Sony plans to donate $100,000 from the proceeds of a limited time Sony VAIO pink bundle to help find a cure. So it sounds like Sony’s heart is in the right place when it comes to supporting an important cause.

And in the interests of making up for what they did with the slurry ad, wouldn’t it be nice for Sony to repeat their largesse of last year with the Reader – donating $10 for each reader sold during the month of October, only a few days away? If you’d like to get in touch with someone at Sony to support the idea of this, the contact listed on the 9/26/06 press release about the Reader is: Valerie Motis, valerie.motis@am.sony.com, at Sony Electronics, Inc. Such a donation would take the sting out of that nasty ole’ Sony Reader ad besmirching us librarians and make me smile, instead, when I see it.

More as it happens,

Cheryl
