You Simply Have to See This

May 1, 2008 I realize this is a bit off-topic, but you simply have to see this. The American Library Association and American Libraries teamed up to create a hilarious video on how to get the most out of the Annual Conference. Written, shot, and scored in a 1950s style, it makes what normally would have been dead boring a hoot.

Despite the fact that I've been to more ALA conferences than I care to count, and know exactly how I can be most effective there (even if I don't always completely follow through...), I watched the entire thing. It was just so funny that I couldn't wait to see what anachronistic thing our guide, Dr. Wally Walton, PhD "Professor of Genius" would say next.

Perhaps my favorite part was when he was describing the Internet Cafe, where attendees can check their "electronic telegrams" and the "world wide webs, whatever those are". A minor point, but he really should have said "world wide interwebs". I mean, let's get it straight. But whatever, it's a riot no matter how you look at it. Great job ALA and AL, you've placed the bar high for our online video forays.

Please, Roy: It's the world wide intertubes. Haven't our senators taught you anything?

You know exactly how you can be most effective at ALA? I've been going for 33 years, and I'm still not sure...

But I agree: The video is a hoot.

Yes, Walt, I DO know how I can be most effective, and I can say it one word: Bars. That's right, I can be most effective having conversations with people over our favorite drinks, whether it be diet soda or The Macallan. You won't find it on the official schedule but there it is. Set up your meetings in advance with the folks you most want to hook up with. The rest is, well, up to you. As I'm sure you know. :-)
