Twitterpated Yet Again

January 5, 2009

A good while ago in Internet time I started to dabble with Twitter, the microblogging service that suddenly seems like the flavor of the month. I dropped it later in the same year, saying in part:

Lately I've been on it very little, and have given "what are you doing?" updates only eight times in the entire month of August. Sure, there was a vacation in there too, but I didn't miss it in the least. I even had a computer with me, and while I found the time to delete tons of spam email,  I couldn't be bothered to provide a Twitter update (even when I had cool things to say like "visiting the Canadian Parliament" and "sightseeing in one of the oldest cities in North America").

When I came back from vacation I'd even go to Twitter.com, look at the updates of the people I was following, and still could not think of anything worth saying. Yes, Twitterites, I know that you're not supposed to think about it, you're just supposed to write about whatever you are doing at that moment. But even so, I had Twitter writer's block (is Twitterblock a word?), if you can imagine such a thing. Nothing I could write seemed worthwhile to me.
But then later, as more people got on it, I found myself drifting back. I downloaded and installed a Twitter-only client called Twhirl which now sits among all the other windows on my desktop. And at my day job we began experimenting with Yammer, which is like a Twitter for organizations (you can microblog just for your colleagues).

And just today, of all things, I acquired my 500th follower. Are you as astonished as I? Who are these people, and why don't they have better things to do? But whatever. I also know that at least some of them are basically spam followers. For reasons still unknown to me some people who I've never heard of or met follow me (I do not have to approve followers although I'm notified), which I take to mean some sort of ploy to get you to follow their spam tweets.

Anyway, lest you think 500 followers makes me some kind of Twitter star, allow me to burst that bubble. There are a number of other librarians more followed than I in the Twitterverse, and here are just a few (with follower numbers from today):

Jessamyn West (2046)
David Lee King (1333)
Michael Stephens (963)
Karen Schneider (952)
Stephen Abram (557)

There are no doubt others (sorry if I missed you!). Meanwhile, thank you brungrrl, for becoming my 500th follower. The next tweet's for you.
