Time to Sharpen the Quill Pen
July 14, 2008
I mentioned in an
earlier post that
Deep Web Technologies was sponsoring a writing contest around the question "What will the landscape of federated search look like in ten years?". The winning essay of 1,500 words or less would net the author $500. Well, now
the pot has been sweetened and the deadline extended.
How has the pot been sweetened? Well, the winner has a guaranteed slot in the program of
Computers in Libraries 2009 (March 30-April 1 in the DC area). But more than that,
you get to go on Deep Web Technologies' dime (they will reimburse travel and lodging expenses). Add to this the fact that the piece will also be published in the
Computers in Libraries magazine and you have the potential to jump-start your career with a fair bit of notice.
But don't get them wrong, "This is not to say that we don’t welcome submissions from people with lots of experience in federated search, librarians, faculty, and others," Sol Lederman states on the Federated Search blog, "We welcome all voices."
To encourage and enable library school students to participate, the deadline has been extended to the end of October.
Full disclosure: I am one of the
judges of the contest, although I am receiving no compensation for doing so.
