Too many librarians, or not enough?

July 2, 2007

I have a small confession to make. I'm a "lurker." I'm not the creepy type that hangs out by the freshman dorms (anyone who tells you otherwise is a dirty liar). I'm the cyber type who tools around on blogs, reads discussion boards and subscribes to listserves, and I never submit a post or leave a comment. I listen in on all this Web 2.0 dialog and then I'm gone. I'm like a geeky voyeur ninja. No one ever new I was there. The only record of my presence is an additional count on the pages' statistics, and maybe the uneasy feeling that someone passed through.

The reason I'm admitting this is because recently my inbox has been filling up from posts to the NEW-LIB listserve. I seriously spent a good hour going through them all today, and I was pretty much just skimming each message. It can generate a lot of email, but it's a great place to lurk. The most recent debate is basically: "are there any library jobs out there or not?" As I will be graduating with my MLS in a year, I have a bit of a vested interest in this discussion.

The debate seems to be split into two camps. Camp one seems to think that there are going to be lots of library jobs out there for several reasons including: the aging population of current librarians, the need for librarians who grew up in a digital environment, and the expansion of the profession into non-traditional settings. I like camp one. Then there is camp two. Camp two, which appears to be comprised of mostly out-of-work librarians, seems to think that paraprofessionals are taking all the traditional librarian jobs, tight budgets are restricting hiring, and there is some sort of conspiracy where library schools are overplaying the need for librarians to enroll as many hopeful young liberal arts graduates as they can. Camp two scares me.

So, which one is it? When I hit the job market in a year or so, am I going to venture into a vast wasteland of disappointment and frustration, or a lush forest of opportunity and success? Should I believe in the optimism of camp one, or the pessimism of camp two? Any insight into this would be greatly appreciated.

Cheap Propecia,

The date indicates this was from 2007. I can't comment on the current economy, which certainly makes it hard in every profession for new grads -- not just libraries. I can tell you as someone who graduated three years ago and who was successful in finding a great job that it's my opinion that the answer to this question is that both camps are partially right although the retirements we keep hearing about are years away and probably won't help the current crop of students.

Almost all the people whom I went to school with found jobs in their fields of specialization. Here's what we had in common: we were able to move, we got along well with others and had built networks prior to graduation, and we had gained considerable experience in our specializations prior to graduation. Further, most of us who were successful in our job search had served in leadership capacities within our school. Having said that most employers aren't interested in what school you went to or what your grades were; they are interested in what you can do for them right now because they don't have time to train you. Those people in my class (and the class before and after me) who did not gain experience prior to graduation and who were unable to move didn't find jobs. A few of us who had experience found jobs before graduation, most found jobs within a few months with the longest search being seven months.

That being said it is also my opinion that the online schools are over recruiting and are not being upfront with students about what it takes. Why should they when it would adversely effect their bottom line? At one time someone who wanted to go into the field had to move to one of the very few ALA accredited schools so there were far fewer people entering the profession. Now you don't even have to step foot on campus or ever grace the door of the type of library where you'd like to work. What surprised me after I graduated was how many people went into the profession without having any library experience at all.

To find out what it's like out there, I'd ask new librarians in your specialization who were successful in finding jobs. You have to be pretty single minded during the job search and negativity will not help. Surround yourself with professionals who will act as a support network and build you up instead of tearing you down.
