Anaheim Not a Repeat of Orlando, but I’ll Remember Long Walks in the Heat
June 29, 2008

So Anaheim 2008 is not Orlando 2004, as American Library Association (ALA) annual conferences go, but it’s not Washington, DC, or Chicago, either. There are a good number of hotels and restaurants within, oh, a mile or two of the Anaheim Convention Center, but maps given out by hotels, ALA, and even (yikes) LJ don’t do a good job conveying exactly how far away things are, especially given that the convention center is set deeply back from the main road and you can’t fly like a crow.

(Check the LJ 2008 ALA Annual Conference page for more live coverage.)

Those of us walking from the convention center to the Hyatt Regency seemingly just down the road yesterday found the trek took 25 minutes. (Note: the hotel is officially located in nearby Garden Grove.) Some people felt rooked. “So does anyone want to join me and hunt down the person who drew this ALA map, and kill them?” joked OCLC’s Roy Tennant upon moderating a session at said hotel.

At the end of the panel discussion, long lines of librarians formed to wait for the shuttle bus that was not there. A couple of quick-thinking librarians snapped up the only taxi. Figuring that motion was better than stasis, given my severe jet lag, I decided to make the walk back. I began to wonder why exactly I had worn a blue blazer in the 80-plus-degree sun. But at least it was drier than steamy Orlando and I managed to walk off breakfast.

Norman--Anaheim was great. Everybody I met was talking about what a fabulous place it was for a convention. Instead of fighting off hordes of drunks from the Taste of Chicago or stepping over homeless people in DC you could actually go for an evening stroll. And the weather--it doesn't get any nicer!

The evening weather was pleasant. But the main place to take an evening stroll and not be on a wide, almost highway-like road was "Downtown Disney," which features ubiquitous piped-in music and requires a bag search upon entrance (at least the way I went in).

Anaheim was boooooring - too clean, too new. I need hordes of drunks and homeless people to make me feel at home.
